AI Is Raising the Bar. Is Your Cloud Infrastructure Keeping Up? 

Cloud migration was once approached as a question of movement, measured through timelines, cost efficiencies, and the ability to stabilise infrastructure. That phase, while necessary, addressed only a portion of what enterprises are now expected to deliver. As artificial intelligence progresses beyond contained experimentation and begins to take shape within day-to-day operations, the role of cloud in enabling this technology is being reconsidered. With AI workloads expected to rise from less than 10% of cloud computing today to nearly 50% by 2029, the demands placed on cloud environments are changing faster than most foundations can keep pace with. Systems that were designed to host applications are now being assessed on their ability to support intelligence, decision-making, and continuous execution across the organisation. 

This shift is gradual in how it appears, yet far-reaching in its implications. The focus has shifted from how quickly organisations move to the cloud to whether their environments can support what comes next. 

Where Cloud Falls Short of AI’s Demands 

For a considerable period of time, cloud adoption was guided by infrastructure outcomes, where success was defined through availability, elasticity, and predictable cost structures. Once workloads were stabilised and modernisation targets were met, the assumption was that the core environment had been established. That assumption is now being tested under a different set of conditions. 

Artificial intelligence introduces an operating model where systems are expected to process information continuously, respond to changing inputs as they arrive, and support decisions that evolve with each interaction. These requirements place pressure on architectures that were not designed with such responsiveness in mind, bringing into focus the need for environments where data, models, and workflows operate as a connected system within modern cloud computing and infrastructure. 

Cloud, in this context, becomes the environment where intelligence is executed, shaping how it is created, distributed, and applied across the enterprise. What matters now is whether systems can operate together, respond as events unfold, and support execution aligned with how AI operates.  

Why Most Enterprises Still Fall Behind 

Despite sustained investment in cloud over the past decade, many organisations continue to operate within environments that reflect earlier priorities. Core systems remain closely tied to legacy infrastructure, often because they sit at the centre of revenue, compliance, or operational control. Cloud implementations, while present, are often layered alongside existing systems instead of being fully integrated. Data follows a similar pattern. It exists in large volumes but is spread across systems that don’t work well together, which limits how useful it is. Even when available, it is not always in a form that can support ongoing decision-making across functions. 

At the same time, AI depends on consistency across data, coordination across systems, and visibility into how outcomes are produced. In their absence, initiatives tend to remain confined to controlled environments, unable to extend into broader operational use. What appears as progress at the infrastructure level begins to show its limits when measured against the requirements of intelligent systems. The gap may not be immediately visible, but it becomes increasingly apparent as organisations attempt to extend AI beyond initial deployments, particularly when scaling custom artificial intelligence solutions. 

What Must Be Built Before Migration 

As organisations begin to extend AI beyond initial deployments, the focus shifts to whether the environment being built is prepared for how AI operates. The difference often comes down to a set of underlying capabilities that determine whether systems can extend beyond initial deployments or remain limited in scope for each artificial intelligence solution:  

  • Data Foundation 

Everything begins with how data is organised and made available. In many environments, data exists in abundance yet remains difficult to use consistently, often because it is spread across systems that were never designed to work together. A usable technical backbone, however, brings that data into alignment. It ensures that information is accessible when needed, governed in a way that maintains trust, and updated in coherence with how the organisation operates. This applies as much to unstructured data as it does to structured datasets, as both play a role in shaping how AI systems interpret and respond to signals. 

  • Cloud-Native Design 

As data begins to move more fluidly, the behaviour of workloads changes with it, as AI does not follow predictable usage patterns, and environments need to adjust as demand shifts. This is where cloud-native design becomes important. Approaches built around containers and serverless execution allow systems to expand and contract in line with actual usage. The benefit lies in the ability to support workloads that vary in intensity without requiring constant adjustment. 

  • Integration Layer 

Once data and processing capabilities are aligned, attention shifts to how systems interact. Many environments still rely on connections designed for periodic exchange, which makes it difficult for actions to move across systems as they happen. An API-led approach begins to address this by allowing systems to communicate more directly, while event-driven mechanisms ensure that responses are triggered as conditions change. Together, they create a flow where information and actions can move across the environment without waiting on coordination points. 

  • Governance & Security 

As systems become more capable of acting on their own, the need for control does not diminish; instead, it becomes more embedded within how the environment operates. Hence, governance is about ensuring that every action follows a defined structure. Identity, policy, and traceability work together to maintain accountability, allowing systems to operate independently within defined boundaries. 

  • Observability 

As these layers come together, understanding how the environment behaves becomes increasingly important. Decisions are no longer based solely on planned outcomes, but on how systems are performing as they operate. Observability provides that perspective, by offering a continuous view of how data moves, how systems respond, and how outcomes take shape over time. This visibility allows organisations to adjust as they scale, ensuring that what has been built continues to support what is expected of it. 

Your Cloud Foundation Determines How Far AI Can Go 

By this stage, most organisations have already invested in both cloud and AI. What sets them apart is how well the two are able to work together within the same environment. In some cases, progress continues with added effort at each step, while in others, new capabilities extend more naturally from what is already in place. That difference is shaped by how the system design has been structured, and whether it can support systems that rely on continuous data, coordinated execution, and immediate response. In essence, cloud sets the conditions for how far AI can be taken across the organisation and how consistently it can operate once it is there. The choices made here shape everything that follows.
