Industry Focus and Scope
United Energy Pakistan Limited (UEPL), UEP Alpha Limited, and UEP Beta GmbH, collectively UEP, are subsidiaries of United Energy Group (UEG), an energy company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. With nearly four decades of operations in Pakistan, UEP is the country’s largest foreign oil and gas exploration and production company. From its beginnings in the Badin Concessions, the business has expanded through multiple mergers and acquisitions while continuing to contribute to indigenous hydrocarbon production.
As the organization grew, so did the complexity of its enterprise technology landscape. Multiple ERP environments across different parts of the business created the need for a more unified operating model capable of supporting greater integration, visibility, and efficiency.
The Challenge: Managing a Fragmented Enterprise Landscape
UEP operated across two distinct business environments. UEPL primarily relied on Oracle EBS and Maximo, supported by several additional applications, while UEP Alpha and Beta operated on SAP ECC. Although many of the same Finance, HR, PSCM, and Operations teams supported both environments, the systems remained largely disconnected.
This fragmented ERP landscape hindered efficiency across core business functions, as teams navigated separate platforms, processes, and data sources. Maintaining multiple systems also demanded significant administrative effort and increased operating costs, reinforcing the need for a more integrated enterprise environment.
Key Challenges
- Parallel ERP platforms with limited integration across the organization.
- Duplication of effort across shared operating teams.
- Absence of a single source of truth for enterprise data.
- Prolonged financial closing and reporting cycles.
- Higher administrative effort and cost associated with maintaining multiple systems.
The Solution: A Unified SAP S/4HANA Platform
UEP partnered with Abacus to consolidate its enterprise systems onto a single SAP S/4HANA platform through a greenfield implementation. The transformation followed a big-bang deployment approach, replacing Oracle EBS, SAP ECC, and Maximo in one coordinated implementation.
SAP S/4HANA became the foundation of the new enterprise environment, bringing core business processes together within an integrated ERP architecture and enabling real-time transaction processing, analytics, and access to business information through SAP Fiori.
Implementation Highlights
- Enterprise-Wide SAP S/4HANA Deployment: Oracle EBS, SAP ECC, and Maximo were replaced through a greenfield implementation designed to establish a common enterprise platform across UEP.
- Integrated Finance and Controlling: Financial Accounting, Controlling, and Joint Venture Accounting were implemented to bring core financial processes into the unified environment.
- Operational and Asset Management: Material Management and Logistics, Plant Maintenance, Project Systems, and Investment Management were deployed to support UEP’s operational and project requirements.
- Workforce and Procurement Integration: Human Capital Management was implemented alongside SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, while SAP Ariba was integrated with SAP S/4HANA, bringing workforce and procurement processes into a more connected enterprise environment.
- Project Governance and Monitoring: SAP Solution Manager was extensively used to monitor project progress, maintain control over implementation activities, and support project reporting.
- Unified User Experience: SAP Fiori provided users with a personalized interface for accessing transactions, information, and analytical capabilities within the new environment.
The Impact: One Integrated Enterprise Environment
The transformation established a unified SAP environment across UEP, replacing disparate systems with a common enterprise platform. This provided a more cohesive foundation for managing business processes, information, and cross-functional operations across the organization.
By bringing core functions into an integrated technology environment, UEP improved operational coordination, strengthened enterprise-wide visibility, and created a more effective basis for timely, informed decision-making.
Key Outcomes
- Established a single source of truth, improving access to consistent business information across the enterprise.
- Reduced duplication of effort and improved process efficiency across core business functions.
- Enhanced system performance alongside stronger reporting and analytical capabilities.
- Shortened financial book-closing cycles, supporting more efficient reporting.
- Reduced system administration effort and associated technology costs.
- Improved operational visibility, data validity, and cycle times, including greater visibility across invoicing, accounts receivable, and collections.
Conclusion
UEP’s transformation marked a decisive shift from a fragmented enterprise systems landscape to a single, integrated SAP environment. By consolidating Oracle EBS, SAP ECC, and Maximo onto SAP S/4HANA and integrating SuccessFactors and Ariba, UEP established a more connected foundation for managing financial, operational, procurement, and workforce processes, while improving access to reliable information, streamlining critical business cycles, and supporting greater efficiency across the organization.
